Agudath Yisrael of America, together with all rabbis of orthodox communities, came out in a call to the public to take part in the referendum which will take place next Tuesday – together with the elections for the New York city council.
The referendum will deal with the question of approving the founding of casino homes in New York and its vicinity, with the intention that in case it is approved – to establish five casinos in the countryside, the vacation cities of the haredi public, already this year.
In an advertisement titled "Ase le'maan tinokos shel beis raban", the public is called to mark the word "NO" in the referendum. Meanwhile, long editorials on the terrible danger found in establishing casinos in the Catskills, have been published last weekend in the flag newspapers of both camps of Satmar – Der Yid and Der Blatt.
But it seems that Satmar – Kiryat Yoel has decided, in contrast to all the others, to support the casinos. In a mail which Kiryat Yoel spokesman, Moshe Indig, sent out to non-Jewish newspapers, he writes: "An editorial written by the Yeshiva News site regarding the opposition of the orthodox public to the establishment of casinos, is an advertising article, the editor of the site does not represent any body, and he himself does not belong to the Hassidic stream. We shall support the referendum and the establishment of the casinos in Sullivan County, since our community always supports any issue which is beneficial to our state, and therefore we shall not oppose the founding of a casino in Sullivan County".
