"If we were not there, it would have ended with murder"

Brutal attack against Hgray"l, which occurred in the early morning, just before shacharis - stirred shock throughout all strata of the Haredi public.

First, to what happened inside the house during the attack: the house of Hgray"l Steinman is wide open. There are no locks, and most of the day there is free entrance to the house. In Hgray"l's room at the time were Rabbi Moshe Yehuda Schneider and Rabbi Avraham Sheinin, studying with the Rosh Yeshiva, every morning before prayer.

They were shocked at the sight of 28- year-old student, a resident of Kiryat Sefer , who came in the room quickly, attacked Hgray"l while pushing him in the chest with one hand and his other hand trying to drag him out of bed to throw him on the floor. Whilst rioting, he cried for revenge and that "you will see, we don’t believe you, I will kill you."
Rabbi Schneider was seized in total shock. He was pale as a sheet and looked ready to faint. Companionship, Rabbi Avraham Sheinin, recovered and tried to grab the attacker. But as he tried to shake his clothes, so he reinforced the urgency and rioting. "I merited saving the life of the Gedol Hador," he said later when describing how he managed to extract the attacker from hgray"l.

Rabbi Moshe Yehuda Schneider performed tearing of his garment at noon, saying: "I am a definite talmid - and must rip my clothes. Unless we were there, it would have ended in murder!"
With bruises to his ribs and severe pain, Hgray"l tried opening with shacharis. However he was unable to stand during shemona esrei.

His household member's say, that since then is wrapped in silence and does not say a word, except the sound of muffled moans of pain heard from time to time. Even the complaint of his pain has not been heard. Personal physician, who was called to the house, I examined him and said he does not suffer any broken bones.

Attacked police

This news about the severe and brutal attack shook all walls of orthodox Jewry, from small to large, rabbis who heard reacted with shock to the news and some even shed tears .

Rosh Kollel Ateret Shlomo , Rabbi Shlomo Ber Sorotzkin, hurried out to the kollels under his management . He rushed into each kollel shouting, while crying: "Get out impure people! You have no part amongst us!" He ordered students who voted עץ or זך to immediately leave the kollel.
