Hgr"y Yosef explains: "I do not interfere in politics"
Clarification letter the Rishon Lezion announces: "All the rumors about my support for lists or candidates - are not true" • Inside: letter

Following the storm last weekend due to the letter of the Rishon Lezion Hgr"y Yosef, in which he supposedly implies in support of Netivot mayoral candidate - Eyal Mesika Hgr"y clarifies in another letter that he did not mean it and does not intervene at all in politics.
"I hereby stress my opinion concerning what was published in my name concerning the cities as well as Ashkelon and Netivot that I interfere in local elections, and use what we wrote or said - all this is, and I have no part in it," writes Hgr"y.
"G-d forbid to mislead people, and we have no relevance whatsoever to the party or candidate, and may we merit to spread Torah and halacha in the way of Maran my father ztvk"l, and glorify the Torah and increase and strengthen His law."
Signed: "with the blessing of the Torah and its students, Yitzchak Yosef".
Apart from the fear of legal ramifications of interfering in politics seems that behind publishing the clarification letter is another reason. It turns out that during a meeting held between Shas chairman Aryeh Deri and Rabbi Yoram Abergel last Sukkot, Deri promised that Shas would not intervene in support of a candidate for mayor of Netivot. It was a few days after a widely publicized demonstration featuring students of Rabbi Abergel in front of Shas headquarters on Har Hozvim.
