Jerusalem: shooting, burglary and police chase on Friday night

On Friday night a telephone message was received at the police center in Jerusalem about burglars in a house on Midbar Sinai Street in Givat Hamvater - near Ramat Eshkol. A patrol officer of Lev Habirah station arrived and noticed a broken lock and window, as well as two burglars who are looking for property in the house.

The officer called the burglars to stop, when suddenly the door opened and one of them came toward him, holding something in his hand and trying to attack him. The officer drew his gun and ordered him to get away with a warning, the suspect tried to attack again, and then the officer fired at the suspect's leg. The suspect tried to flee on foot, but the officer chased him and overtook him.

A police officer who lives nearby heard the shooting and came, while watching the injured suspect so he would not escape. Meanwhile, the officer began chasing the second suspect who began escaping from the house. The burglar who was shot, was treated by MDA and United Hatzalah, and was evacuated in a mild to moderate condition in a Magen David Adom ambulance to Hadassah Hospital in Ein Kerem.

Meanwhile, another officer from the main unit who also lives in the neighborhood – identified a passenger car under suspicious circumstances, he summoned additional forces which combed the area, stopped the vehicle and found in it a third suspect, as well as jewelry and suspected stolen checkbooks. Two screwdrivers were found on the scene with which the suspect apparently tried to attack the injured patrol officer - without success.

An investigation revealed that the injured suspect is a fugitive for several months on suspicion of property crimes, he belongs to a squad of burglars which apparently broke during the night into some apartments, the pursuit of the third suspect continues.

The Jerusalem Police Command praised the officer for his courage and determination, and they point out that without rapid response the incident could have ended differently.
