A quarter of Europe's Jews are afraid to identify themselves as Jews

About a quarter of Europe's Jews are afraid to identify themselves as Jews and avoid visiting sites or Jewish events - according to a survey conducted by "European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights ' (FRA).

The survey was presented this week at a conference against anti-Semitism convened in Kiev, capital of Ukraine and held throughout the year in 2013 in France, UK, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Hungary, Romania and Latvia.

The data indicates that the worst situation prevails in Sweden, where 49% of respondents said they avoid showing their Jewishness externally, including not wearing a skullcap for fear of being hurt.

The same fear in France (40 %) and Belgium (36 %).

In Hungary 91 % of the 500 Jewish respondents agreed with the claim that anti-Semitism in the country increased

Last five years. 30 % reported having experienced anti-Semitic incidents in the past year. France responded similarly 88 % of respondents regard the last five years, and 21 % higher than the previous year. High rate of increase in reports of anti-Semitism since 2008 was recorded among respondents in Belgium - 87 %, Sweden - 80 %, and Germany, Italy and the UK - 60 %.

Rate of European Jews who say that they are afraid to identify themselves as Jews, and visit sites and Jewish events was 22 %. About 75 % of survey respondents said they failing to report to the police on anti-Semitic incidents. 64 % said that they did not report the incidents deteriorated violence.
