A new initiative is underway in Tzfat, in which the internal haredi fights are gaining more momentum.
As recalled, in Tzfat there are a few parties running for elections:
The 'Gimel' party, including the congregation of Harav Kenig of Breslev and the Biala Chassidim (No. 2 on the list is Moshe Porush - a Biala - Lugano chossid who came to the city a year ago) – which supports the incumbent mayor Ilan Shohat .
The "Taf" Party (the representative in the first place is a Sephardi from the Ohr Yakar yeshiva - Emanuel Levy, a chassidish representative of Seret Vizhnitz - Eliezer Lazar, a representative of Degel Hatorah - Uri Rozovsky) – who support Shlomo Hadad a haredi representative, former chairman of the religious council.
The Chabad Party – which merged together with 'Tekuma' – on top of the list is Moshe Ohayon, Chabad chossid, who supports Ilan Shohat, number two on the list is a member of the Religious Council Motti Dayan, a Chabad chossid related to Chabad rabbis in the city. Dayan is more inclined to support Ohana, as does the retiring representative of Chabad Yom Tov Sabah.
Number three on the list, Yotam Caro, is considered a confidant of Rabbi Shmuel Eliahu, and has already announced his support of Shlomo Hadad. Caro will bring Chabad votes from the national-haredi sector. It is possible that the votes for the party will be split between the various candidates.
Shas party - chairman Ronen Ganot supports Shohat, but the party itself has not announced support for a candidate for mayor.
This morning (Wednesday), a group of Agudath Yisrael - "general hassidim of the holy city of Tzfat" – organized in an appeal for signatures of residents against the Hamevasser newspaper . "We must regretfully inform of our demand hereby attached to immediately cancel the subscription to Hamevasser newspaper to which we are susbscribed."
"Unfortunately , despite our being loyal to "Shlomei Emunim" and to Hamevasser newspaper from its inception, the paper turns its back to us by its refusal to publish an article about the opening of the headquarters of the 'Unified Haredi List' verbatim, as sent to you, and as was published in the newspapers 'Hamodia' and 'Yated Ne'eman'.
"In addition, we learned that MK Rabbi Meir Porush and his son Nochi Porush and their representatives, continue their efforts to thwart the 'Imofoed Haredi Party' marked 'Taf', by various pressure and harassment of rabbis, gabboim and community leaders, and thereby they are effectively taking side against the majority of the Hasidic Agudath Yisrael public in the holy city of Safed, despite the fact that for the sake of peace and unity we have given up on the letter Gimel".
At the Shlomei Emunim headquarters they prefer not to address the actual claims, but respond with contempt to the said letter, they said there were no cancellations of subscriptions to the paper.
