Will Hakablan Street be replaced by Rabbi Ovadia Yosef?
One of the Yosef family members spoke to a senior city official: Goal to announce street name change at the end of the shloshim • But there is a legal problem "one can commemorate only after two years have passed since the death" • special procedure allows to shorten procedures when it comes to important personal • senior municipality, "Barkat will make every effort to properly commemorate the great achievements of Maran"

After helping to establish the mourning tent in front of Hgr"o's home on Hakablan Street in Har Nof , Jerusalem municipality continues efforts to commemorate Harav Ovadia Yosef zt"l.
Mayor Nir Barkat wrote on his Facebook page: "In the coming months the city will act appropriately to commemorate the great achievements of Maran in Jerusalem in which he worked and lived."
These sentences were field rumor, suggesting changing the name of Hakablan Street to Rabbi Ovadia Yosef.
Conversation with senior officials in the Jerusalem Municipality confirm that he will indeed do everything possible to perpetuate the memory of President of the Council of Sages, but about changing a street name, "cannot legally do this, only after two years have elapsed since the namesake of the street passed away. Even then the names Committee of the municipality must approve it."
However, according to the same official, "there is a special procedure whereby when it comes to personalities, we can shorten the procedure, and there were precedents - and therefore the mayor will make every effort to properly commemorate the great achievements of Maran."
Behind the scenes was a call from a family member with a senior city official, to investigate the matter, in order to announce the name change of the street by the end of the shloshim of the rabbi, but during the conversation he was told about the legal problem.
Either way, it is possible that the proclamation will be made in any case, although the actual change will only occur in a few months.
