Israel Prize laureate seriously injured in hit and run accident

This morning (Sunday) a little before 11:00am, an accident occurred on Benvenisti street near the Malha Mall in Jerusalem. Prof. David Kazhdan, 67, was injured while riding by a truck, he was treated by MDA medics and Hatzala teams, and was taken in a serious condition to the trauma room at Hadassah Hospital in Ein Kerem.

An initial police investigation revealed that Kazhdan was hit by a truck, whose driver did not stop and continued driving. The police are searching for the offending driver and this is probably a "hit and run" accident .

Hadassah spokeswoman Rachel Goldblatt said tonight that the condition of Prof. Kazhdan who reached the Trauma Unit at Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital after being hit by a truck while riding his bike – is very difficult. The attending medical team is conducts a continuous CPR process since the morning hours to save his life.

Prof. David Kazhdan was born in Moscow, immigrated to Israel in 2004, and is Professor of Mathematics at the Hebrew University. Over the years, he came closer to tradition and became a ba'al tshuva.

He is a Member of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Israel Academy of Sciences.

In 2012, Kazhdan won the Israel Prize "for his contributions to group theory and its contribution to the geometrics of representation theory."
