Special Committee for burden equality dedicated today (Wednesday) the debate over whether and how to maintain the honor of women in the IDF - if the bill to equal burden-will pass second and third reading and thousands of Haredim serve in the IDF.
Section, which in its current form is written: "Keeping integration honor and status of women" - sparked a debate in the previous hearing committee. Initiative of the section is Minister Livnat, which under her influence the formulation was written in the Perry Committee. Livnat asked to discuss in front of her so she was invited to the committee today.
In her words, "I demanded to be part of the Perry committee after it emerged that among the committee members there are no woman. In my opinion a Committee of the Knesset which has only one female MK, is a condition that is not normal. Destination for me was and is not only the integration of women in the IDF, but also maintaining their dignity. We already recognize much more mouthful of food in the status of women in the IDF began even before significant recruitment of haredim into the IDF." Livnat added that as long as there is no decision to extend the utility of the Hesder soldiers – it is not right to prolong service of women in the IDF.
"Another objective in the committee, which is moral and worth nothing less is maintaining the status and dignity integration of women in the IDF. For years we are fighting for this goal. I respect the need to allow religious soldiers of all stripes to live by faith. Burden equality law is fundamental values which may be a conflict between them. The more haredim that will enlist the more the collision will increase, and our duty to preserve prerogatives continued integration and honor of the soldiers saying concrete law."
Committee chairman MK Shaked, said: "There is no question about the nature and importance of the subject. Debate today is whether the law should enshrine it or not.
According to MK Eliezer Stern (Hatnua), "With respect to save the honor of women in the IDF, one should remember that the soldiers hurt their dignity of Palestinian women much more than they hurt women serving in the army, and yet there is no law on the subject. If you already want to worry about honoring women in the IDF then worry about the honor of Haredim which serve in the army."
"I think we should try to put as little laws to military command. Saying that, if it would not harm other constituencies it would not bother me. I just think we opened room to legitimate demands we do not know how to get out of them," The conclusion Stern suggested was to leave the word "integration" and download dignity and status.
The intention to bring law clause intended to protect the dignity of women responded MK Moshe Gafni (Yahadut Hatorah) said, "In Haredi society, the status and dignity of women is more than men. We have no problem that the bill contains the obligation to protect women's honor, but at the same time we must have a law regarding respect for the dignity of the ultra-Orthodox. "Added MK Gafni: "If the section will be approved, it is possible in a situation where a woman decides to turn to the High Court after a base in which haredim serve did not let her in, and although the Supreme Court will require her to be allowed in, on the basis of the requirement that it maintain its dignity.
Porush said: "The honor that we, the Orthodox, give women another kind of respect, we have our own way in which we educate our generation. My wife would not be affected if a group of men pass by her and rotate their head. She will not be insulted. If you think you pass a law here, and the law will bring thousands of Orthodox to the army you should also know that there are those now who do not want women to walk around next to them. If a female soldier walks around the dining room the ultra-Orthodox soldiers will turn away. Pass such a law, but no one should come claiming if someone closed his eyes. It's our lifestyle. You want to change our lifestyle? Declare this in the law. We are not opposed to it - we just want to mirror a parallel section for the Orthodox", he concluded.
Committee Chairman Ayelet Shaked (Habayit Hayehudi) concluded that understanding the dignity of women in the IDF can be kept by military commanders - who know how to act on any intelligence and judgment. Likewise Chairperson stated that given and the committee will vote on the stage bill and the relevant section she will allow MKs to choose between three possible alternatives as proposed by Knesset members during the discussion:
1. Keep the bill from the original version.
2. Download worded proposal the word dignity of women and instead write maintaining the status and integration.
3. Keep the original wording and add maintaining respect for Orthodox soldiers
