Yeshiva manager caught at customs: smuggled esrogim from Jarbeh

The last two weeks Ben Gurion Airport Customs seized 400 esrogim from possession of three passengers who tried to smuggle esrogim to Israel, tax evasion and without the approval of the Plant Protection Ministry of Agriculture and Food Service approval of Health Ministry.

The smugglers: Yeshiva manager of Beitar Illit, who passed through the green track and when inspectors looked through his suitcases found 125 esrogim. Investigation of the yeshiva manager found that he came down with another passenger, who came to the reception hall. Investigators identified the other passenger, in whose possession was holding the personal briefcase of the yeshiva manager, which also contained esrogim.

The explanation provided by the yeshiva manager, who returned without any personal luggage - but only with esrogim, was: "I went to Jarbeh to bring these esrogim - we pray only for them."

More from the esrogim smugglers, a Jew who came from France and his luggage were seized by customs testers at Ben Gurion Airport about 150 esrogim carefully wrapped. He said he wanted to do a mitzvah and therefore brought the esrogim from France "to hand them out to Jews in Israel." And an Israeli citizen, who went through the green track and in his luggage were about 125 esrogim.

Import taxes on esrogim are 2.72 ₪ per kg but not more than - 144% plus VAT. The value of each esrog to pay estimated taxes is about $ 30.
