In midst of 'mi yichye umi yamus' - beeper began to beep

I wrapped myself deeply in the tallis, listening to the pleasant voice of the chazzan roaring: "Unesane tokef kedushas hayom, ki hu nora ve'ayom… beRosh Hashana yekasevus… uveyom tzom Kippur…"

As soon as the chazzan got to the words " Who will live and who will die," the United Hatzalah beeper which was hanging on my kittel belt started beeping: "Bnei Brak team, good afternoon, Neufeld Street 4 year old girl unconscious after drowning".

I'm a volunteer paramedic in United Hatzalah, on Yom Kippur I was a drive in charge of the city, I took off the talis, closed the machzor, and raced for my life to the scene of tragedy.

I got out and saw a sweet little girl, dressed in white like an angel, lying on the pavement unconscious, and around her a hustle.

"She drowned," yells someone. One of the friends begins to resuscitate the girl, and when the ambulance arrives, we put her in and continue CPR. Massages and more massages, the resuscitation and another, she does not wake up.

Tragedy in Bnei Brak: 4 year old drowned in mikveh

I mumble Tehillim and continue with massages.

Much time passes, someone knocks on my shoulder, "mobile intensive care unit arrived", we move the little angel inside, where two paramedics, ambulance driver and I continue with tremendous efforts when the doors are closed. Adrenaline syringes, preparing a vein, endotracheal tube, we invested all the efforts and possible solutions, but nothing helps.

I did not know what to say to the father

With half an eye, I see through the MICU window a group of women standing weeping into their books of Tehillim.

The door opens, an officer informs the father arrived, someone must have called him from shull, the paramedic looks at me and sighs, an hour passed, and still nothing happens. Around there is a crazy hustle, the father sits in a chair next to the driver, weeping.

My heart broke, I wanted to get up and hug him to say something, but the words did not come, his girl and my girl, are the same age, same height.

The paramedic thanks everyone, and announces that we are evacuating to Schneider.

He shakes my hand, says thank you, I go down from the MICU into the red and white films of the forensic department of the police.

The ambulance makes a U-turn and drives off. Unconceivable shock: a little girl playing with her friends at the entrance to the neighborhood mikveh, ended her life so tragically, in the pool of water, when no one was around.

I go into the car, and drive back to shull, I find it hard to see, hard to understand, hard to function. I went into shull, wrapped in tallis, put my head on the stender, close my eyes and mutter quietly with everyone else in a different atmosphere: "in the book of life blessing and peace and good living may we be remembered and inscribed before You, we and all Your people Israel for a good life and peace."

May her soul be bound in the bond of life.
