Barkat surprises: opposes Cinema City opening on Shabbos

Wink toward orthodox? Nir Barkat opposes opening Cinema City on Shabbos.

Unsuccessful timing, Mayor of Jerusalem Nir Barkat was forced to decide on the most sensitive topic.

This is a response to the High Court petition filed by the municipality to the HC concerning the petition of Hitorerut that requires opening the Cinema on Shabbos.

Contract signed between the developers and the owners of the land enclosure - the municipality and the Ministry of Finance, included a clause that denies the opening of the complex on Shabbos and Jewish holidays. Awakening petition argued that the covenant is unreasonable as it is the site for culture and recreation, and commerce, which are allowed on Shabbos by municipal bylaw.

In response to that, the Attorney of the municipality, Amnon Merchav, representing the mayor argued that the status quo in Jerusalem, there is areas which are open on Shabbos and those which are not, and that the decision not to allow the opening of Cinema City is that the Kiryat Leom is a governmental symbol in the city.

Merchav added that "the agreement signed by the developers with the Treasury determined that the complex will be closed on Shabbos and this agreement is approved by the City Council. Unknown to us contacting promoters Finance to change the terms of the agreement if they want it they should contact the Treasury. Whether there is a new agreement between the developer and treasury, it will be the second time the city council votes."

The mayor added that the High Court asked to reject the petition.

We emphasize that the Treasury made it clear in his response, holder of the land that does not oppose the opening of the enclosure on Shabbos.

The big question is whether the appearance of Barkat for Shabbos will hurt his chances in the secular sector, after all the secular media will likely not really praise the above step. Did he do it to wink at the smaller chassiduses who decided to support him with a white paper at the ballot? - Time will tell.
