Bribery efforts failed and Rabbi Berland remained in Morocco

Community leader of Shuvu Banim, Rabbi Eliezer Berland, who planned to travel to Uman, canceled after failed bribery deal between the Ukrainian government officials, reports Ma'ariv.

According to the official version, received by his associates, the Rabbi who found refuge in Morocco was supposed to arrive in Uman but "missed the flight," so to speak. To many of his followers this version seemed strange: on Erev Rosh Hashana there are countless flights to Ukraine, and it is unlikely that the design of appropriate flight is so complex.

Ari Galhar from Ma'ariv, reveals from sources involved in the affair that the story here is different: Rabbi was concerned about coming to Ukraine since they have an extradition treaty with Israel. Recall, against the Rabbi, a request is pending on Israeli detention on suspicion of serious criminal offenses.

But a senior at the Ukrainian government agreed to guarantee the arrival of Rabbi without any arrest for bribes of hundreds of thousands of dollars. The flight was booked but at the last minute the senior announced that he could not guarantee the non-arrest of the rabbi.

Therefore the Rabbi preferred, to spend Rosh Hashana in a safe place away in Morocco, and not come to Uman and risk arrest and transfer to the cellars of the investigation of the Israel Police.

It should be noted that this is the first time the rabbi did not pray on Rosh Hashanah in Uman. The Rabbi was not only a pioneer of Rosh Hashana at Uman, but worked to encourage people to come to pray at the place of salvations.
