Friday night horror • stabbing struggle in Karlin synagogue

On Friday night, a shocking event occurred in Meah Shearim in Jerusalem: shortly after 1:00 at night a fight broke out between several people in the Karlin synagogue on Avinoam Yellin Street. Two were stabbed and taken in mild to moderate condition to hospital.

At 1:12 a report was received at MDA on the stabbing in the synagogue. A 41 year old stabbed escaped from the synagogue, while the other 33 year old remained.

Yossi Rafaeli, Hatzalah, reported to B'Chadrei Charedim the occurrence of events. "I received a call from the Hatzalah operator concerning a stabbing at Karlin synagogue and left to the scene with another medic. On the way, at Kikar Shabbos I noticed a gathering, and people stopped me and told me that a man was stabbed. I stopped and gave medical treatment to a man in his 40s, who was stabbed in the neck and stomach.

"I reported to the operator that I am treating a wounded man on Kikar Shabbos, as another volunteer handled treated the stabbed man at the synagogue, with stabs on his hand and head.

"Police arrived at the two scenes, interrogated the stabbed, and accompanied them to the hospital."

Paramedic Aharon Bak, who treated the wounded man in the synagogue, told B'Chadrei Charedim: "According to witnesses, the two non-locals got drunk in the synagogue, found themselves in an argument and stabbed each other."

MDA spokesman Itzik Assaraf told B'Chadrei Charedim that at 1:12 a stabbing was reported in a synagogue, Mobile Intensive Care Units Jerusalem evacuated wounded about 41 in fair condition, stabbed on his upper body to Shaare Zedek Hospital. Another injured aged 33 was taken to hospital in milder condition.

"This is a very unusual event," says Yossi Refaeli to B'Chadrei Charedim, "We used to get similar calls in the downtown area, but not within the ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods. On Kikar Shabbos gathered 60-70 people who were upset by the incident.

"A young boy of 14 came up to me after the end of treatment, and asked me if it is safe to walk along Malchei Yisrael on his return home. He was afraid and I explained to him that it was a specific event and exception, and has nothing to fear."

Jerusalem police opened an investigation.
