The first public admission of a Western country on a plan to attack Syria: British Prime Minister David Cameron's office said this morning (Tuesday) "It's only logical that our armed forces are making preparations for a possible attack." Bureau spokesman said that London is not necessarily going to sit and wait for the UN report on the use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime, and they may respond militarily once that decision is made.
Cameron was forced to cut a summer vacation and return to London today, along with Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, who canceled a planned visit to Afghanistan. Tomorrow an emergency meeting of the National Security Council will convene, in the presence of military commanders and heads of intelligence, in which it will be decided on the ways of action of the UK.
The U.S. is also preparing for an attack: U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said at noon to the British BBC that the U.S. military "is ready for immediate action in Syria, once President Barack Obama will instruct to attack." Hagel added and repeated accusations against the Syrian regime, "I think this is quite clear that use was made of chemical weapons against people in Syria. I think that intelligence shall soon determine that it was not the rebels who used it, and probably there will be good intelligence which can be displayed regarding the fact that the Syrian government was responsible for it. "
At the same time, the government requested permission from Greece to use bases in the country for two jets and warships. According to some reports, despite tensions between Arduan and the West - Turkey may also be used as a military base for American fighter planes.
The Americans probably refrain from using Israeli bases in order not to harm the cooperation they hope to create with Turkey, Yeden and other Arab countries, cooperation which may be damaged if Israel is officially included in it, as happened in the first Gulf War.
Later on Americans received a green light from the Arab League, mainly due to pressure from Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The league issued that it sees Assad as responsible for the use of chemical weapons against civilians.
The Syrian front is still calm. Walid Al - Muallem, the Syrian foreign minister, spoke this morning to the media cameras: "I'm not sure that there will eventually be an attack, but if there is an attack then we have two options - either we surrender or defend ourselves by the means we have. This is the choice we have. I do not want to mention anything beyond that" he said.
Al Muallem opened by rejecting the accusations made by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry last night and claimed that there was no delay in the work of inspectors, and that Syria could not obscure any traces of use of chemical weapons "because they were in the rebel-controlled area."
"If they want to attack Syria - I think that using the excuse of chemical weapons is not trustworthy. Whether they want to achieve other goals through this aggression - I want to wonder: What are these goals?" Al Muallem pondered, and immediately found the answer: "I know that anything that moves in this area has to serve the interests of Israel."
