A convoy of UN inspectors sent a team to Syria to check the claims on the use of chemical weapons against civilians, suffered today (Monday) afternoon fire. Convoy was on its way to the site where chemical weapons were used in the suburbs of Damascus last week - when attacked.
Al Jazeera television network reported that snipers halted following the activities of the inspectors, and that they were taken to one of the Syrian army set up checkpoints in the area. At the same time, alternative vehicles were sent for UN personnel and aid forces.
UN spokesman said: "aimed fire was shot several times" at the test team. Reports did not say whether anyone was hurt in the incident.
Earlier, when inspectors went out to the attack area, two mortar shells were fired at the hotel where inspectors stayed in upscale neighborhood in Damascus.
Syrian television reported that the terrorists (rebels) are behind the attack. The official Syrian news agency SANA reported that three people were injured by mortar shells.
Earlier it was reported that the Assad regime and rebel forces agreed to a cease-fire to allow inspectors to gather evidence safely in place. Although Syria inspectors gave approval, officials in Western governments criticized the Assad regime, claiming that he gave his approval too late. Photographer of the Associated Press - said he saw the UN staff make their way to the site wearing bulletproof vests.
