Demonstrations in Egypt
Israel is for the temporary administration in Egypt – according to a senior Israeli official who spoke to The New York Times. The official said that next week Israel is expected to pressurize Europe and the United States to support the Egyptian interim military government, despite the violence it turns toward Islamic protesters.
The official said that Israeli ambassadors in major capitals around the world will act with their country's foreign ministers to support the move. The reason: another defeat will create chaos in Egypt.
The factor listed the priorities presented by Israel: "If you insist on great principles, then you miss the essentials. It is crucial for Egypt to gain traction at all costs. Firstly, to save what you can, and then deal with democracy, freedom and so on. We try talk to key players, key countries, and sharing our view that we may not like what we see, but what's the alternative? At this point - it's army or anarchy.
"It is very important to us that certain countries will understand the situation as we see it," said the source. "We do it out of a sense of urgency. We will share our position with as many influential countries as we can during the week."
Meanwhile, the government fight in Egypt against the Muslim Brotherhood continued in the constitutional arena too: a special committee formed last month to propose amendments to the Constitution, drafted mainly by the deposed president Morsi's men, is nearing the end of its work.
A committee source told Al-Ahram newspaper: "The constitution of 2012 was formulated by the old regime of the Muslim Brotherhood to ensure the Islamists have the upper hand and they are those who would say the last word about the political future of Egypt. This had to change."
The source revealed that the committee members unanimously agreed that the new constitution must contain a prohibition on the establishment of political parties based on religious foundations. This means that the Muslim Brotherhood's party will not be able to run.
The U.S. and Europe are currently examining the relations with Egypt, due to the violence against protesters of the "Muslim Brotherhood".
