While a fierce struggle is going in the haredi public about army service, it turns out that the army is not enthusiastic about the idea to recruit the haredim: Israel Hayom published this morning (Tuesday) that seniors in the Personnel Directorate announced to members of the Nachal Haredi that the IDF intends to cut down the task year - the third year of the course, and the most important for the haredim, since they can complete matriculation and receive professional training.

The newspaper quoted officials in Nachal Haredi who pain the cuts: "They told us it was decided to cut down on the mission year, so that it would last only eight months. During this year soldiers receive training and complete matriculation at the expense of the IDF. Moreover they are also provided with housing and food. Those are things that appeal to the haredim and bring them into the army. They know that after the end of the service they are full citizens, and that they have a chance to find a profession outside."

The factors did not fail to comment on the fact that the cut arrives precisely at this volatile period in which Haredi soldiers are suffering and their image is persecuted by Haredi fringe elements, and parallel to attempts to legislate the equality of burden. "It is absurd that precisely at the time when trying to increase the number of recruits, the IDF cuts down on the Nachal Haredi. There is no doubt that this step will reduce the number of haredi recruits. Many haredim choose to enlist specifically because of the benefits they receive and the tools they get in the battalion during the task year. If they begin to dismantle the year of task - this will also be the beginning of the disintegration of the Nachal Haredi"

The IDF Spokesman responded that the issue is discussed by the IDF staff. However, military sources said to Israel Hayom that there is no intention to cancel or harm the year of mission and the rights of soldiers who are at this stage.
