The owner of Carmeli Bakery, which serves the haredi community in Golders Green in London, had to say goodbye to the sum of $ 54,000 this week, after the court ruled that a senior employee was fired unjustly.
Chef Tufik Bannali is one of the prominent figures in the bakery and began working there in 2004. Recently the bakery owners told him he is fired from his job after discovering that he used to make use of strawberry jam that is not kosher.
Banali petitioned the court, where he stated that the bakery owners were just looking for "an excuse" to fire him, which they would have done long ago. According to him in 2008, the labor relations with his employers had changed when he turned to the Labour Court and filed a lawsuit against them that they ignore the back pain which he suffered as a result of the workload. Since then, so he claimed, bakery owners saw him as a "problematic employee."
Tensions rose again when the chef filed a lawsuit to the court claiming that his work does not match his handicap.
During the legal investigation, the chef admitted that over a long period made use of a non-kosher jam however he added that the use of jam is just "an excuse" for his dismissal. Therefore, the Court accepted his position and obliged the bakery owners to pay him $54,000 in compensation.
Even the appeal filed by the owners of the bakery was rejected despite the claim that the use of the product is not kosher, could have destroyed the business.
