Arson in Netanya: burned shull to obscure traces

The Centre District Attorney's Office filed today (Thursday) a charge at the the Central District Court in Lod, against Tzuma Fitigo, 24, of Netanya, for offenses of arson, breaking into a place of prayer, threats and insulting a public official.

According to the indictment, a week ago, on the night between the 29.7.13 to 30.7.13 (Tuesday - Wednesday), Fitigo broke into the Shefa Revivim shull in Netanya to steal property. To cover his tracks and hide his fingerprints, Fitigo decided to ignite the synagogue.

Fitigo came to the synagogue again and poured petrol to cause ignition.

As a result, the synagogue was set on fire. The fire burned down all the contents of the synagogue, furniture and Sifrei Kodesh, five Sifrei Torah and two Haftarah books.

The total financial damage caused by the fire is hundreds of thousands of dollars. As a result of the fire, Fitigo got burns and after his arrest was taken to Beilinson Hospital. In the hospital, the accused threatened the officer who oversaw his arrest that he would harm him.
Earlier this week, residents attended the funeral of Sifrei Torah and Sifrei Kodesh which were harmed and burned as a result of the arson.
