The American Road Safety (nhtsa) recently suggested that there must be a requirement of hybrid and electric vehicles to comply with minimum noise to help pedestrians to notice, as required by law pedestrian safety in 2010. If this proposal be implemented, it is estimated by nhtsa that the amount of pedestrians and cyclists injured by traffic accidents will decrease by 2,800 people, for the period of the "life" of the hybrid vehicle.
Electric vehicles and hybrids are driven by petrol or diesel engines at low speeds, and as a result they are becoming quieter and difficult to identify. Proposed standard will fill the requirement of pedestrian safety law of Congress that these vehicles will need to meet the minimum requirements that pedestrians will notice their presence, their location and direction when they travel at lower speeds.
CEO nhtsa explains the proposal, in that it will allow flexibility for vehicle manufacturers to produce different models of different noises, so road users will be able to identify vehicles and decide whether you can safely cross the road.
Under the proposal, the noise will be needed to identify a wide range of street noise and other background noise when the vehicle travels less than 18 miles per hour. And above this speed, the vehicles are noisy enough so that pedestrians and cyclists can see them without the need for additional noise. Every vehicle manufacturer will range wide choice sounds he chooses for his vehicles, but those noises will meet certain minimum requirements. In addition, all vehicles of the same model and manufacturer will have to make similar noises.
Association green light: "pedestrians and cyclists are most vulnerable road users. Therefore the state must enact the corresponding laws to protect them from harm of vehicles. Offer of nhtsa is a good suggestion that can save lives, and should be raised for discussion in the Knesset of Israel.
