Did you ever get a report on traffic offenses from the prime minister or the mayor of the city where you live? Probably not, after all - this is not America...
Last week the New York Police launched an operation for locating drivers who hold cellular devices and send text messages while driving.
But this time the operation had a special character. The one who joined the police force which raided the roads, was none other than New York State Governor, with whose advice and directive the police went out on this campaign, after the SMS plague spread in an unprecedented way, and after it had been proven through data provided by the police, that the rate of killing in road traffic accidents is far higher among those who had sent SMS messages while driving than those that only talk on the phone.
Governor Andrew Como joined the undercover police car and came out with a policeman on a mission, for several hours.
Not less than twenty-one drivers who broke the law were caught by the governor. The surprised drivers found the governor himself in front of them, rebuking them and lecturing them. "You are risking your life. It's not just a question of a fine and points. It's about time you understand that."
According to U.S. law, a criminal caught sending an SMS while driving, gets a report of 120 dollars, and five penalty points added to his license.
