An avreich who went sailing in a rubber boat on Lakewood river, was injured yesterday (Wednesday) lightly.
The incident occurred in the evening, when an avreich who went out with his son to sail the river in a rubber boat, started sinking with the boat in the middle of the river. He was able to move his son into a small motorboat and tried to check and repair the rubber boat. But then also began to sink into the algae. He managed to get to a tree trunk on the river bank and hold on tight while sliding on algae.
The son, who had landed, geard his father call him and ask for help. The child rushed to the road, stopped a haredi Jew in a passing car and told him what happened. The man called the members of Hatzala, who arrived within minutes and went out in kayaks and boats to locate the avrech.
When they were unable – they called the police and the special rescue unit, who came with a sea jet and went out searching. But the man was not found. A member of Hatzala joined the jet and after an hour of searching the avrech was found clinging to a tree branch, which was hidden due to the lush vegetation in place.
The avrech was taken onto the jet and transferred to the Hatzala ambulance. He was hospitalized for tests. Hatzala organization say the avrech was saved from drowning thanks to the rescue vest he wore.
Rubber boat sailing in Lakewood River was prohibited following several disasters which occurred in the past and police fined the avrech for breaking the law.
That day, a little earlier, two boats capsized in an artificial lake in the Catskills Fleischman camp. Two families with children were boating on the lake when one of the boats capsized. The second boat dwellers who were nearby and tried to render aid – capsized as well. Lifeguards rushed to the scene to pull the children and adults from the water. In this case too all wore rescue jackets and required light medical treatment only.
Hatzala organization warns the public not to underestimate laws and wear jackets.
