Rabbinical authorities will already be cut in the next term: Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and Minister of Religious Affairs Naftali Bennett sent a letter to the contestants, announcing that they intended to change the law of the Chief Rabbinate in the next elections: only one rabbi will be appointed, who will head the Council of the Chief Rabbinate, while a Dayan will be appointed as president of the Great Beis Din.

Today the chief Rabbis are in rotation in both positions, but Bennett and Livni are considering separating the roles in the coming term, so that the Great Court will not be headed by one of the chief rabbis.

Rabbi Eliyahu Abergel, who is running for Sephardic chief rabbi, announced this evening on his withdrawal from the race, in light of the request of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef. Rabbi Yehuda Deri withdrew as well.
