Cracks in the coalition: Bennett and Livni disagree on the issue of the referendum

Chairman of Habayit Hayehudi Minister of Economy, MK Naftali Bennett, sets conditions to support his party in the state budget: the faction will support the budget only in exchange for a referendum on political negotiations.

Prior to the vote on the 2013-2014 state budget for second and third reading next week, is expected to announce today the chairman of Habayit Hayehudi that his party would not support the budget if it is decided to hold a referendum to approve the peace agreement which was reached with the Palestinians. Bennett said in private conversations that "It is a value and moral requirement. Our first task is to prevent rupture."
At the moment, despite repeated commitments in the speeches of the Prime Minister Netanyahu for a referendum before signing a political agreement, it is the senior coalition partners who oppose its existence. Chairman of Hatnua, Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and Yisrael Beiteinu Chairman Avigdor Lieberman expressed resistance decisively to bring the issue to the decision of the public.

Chairman of the Knesset and Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, Lieberman said a few weeks ago that "referendums are an escape from the responsibility of decision-makers," while Livni said that "the public has chosen us to make courageous decisions. When we go to war we did not ask the people and should also not do so for a political settlement."
