The DA in Brooklyn released last night (Sunday) the names of the 45 men and one woman convicted of abuse in the haredi community in recent years.
The publication came to break the conspiracy of silence in the haredi public. The New York Post published the list and noted that to date the Brooklyn police investigated 118 cases of abuse, and at the end of the trials those involved were sentenced to imprisonment of 25 years.
Not in all cases those involved were haredi, but all the children who were attacked were from the orthodox community. The most severe sentence was imposed several months ago on Nehemiah Weberman, a senior activist in Satmar, who was sentenced to 103 years in prison.
Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes, said the publication of the names may encourage others to complain. "We think it's good that the community will know the identity of the convicted," said a spokesman for the prosecution. Brooklyn prosecutors were optimistic in view of the heavy penalties imposed on convicted abusers, and speculated that the victims and their families will not allow the continued silence over time.
"More and more people are willing to cooperate and be exposed," said Ronnie Yaus, head of the department of crimes in the Brooklyn DA. "There is a change in attitude. There is more acceptance and more understanding that there is a need to access the criminal justice system."
