Harav Ovadia Yosef tried this evening during his shiur (Motzei Shabbos), to minimize the damage, after the words of Shalom Cohen against knitted kippot:
"Our Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Shalom Cohen spoke a few things against men in that community," he said.
"But I have no doubt that he did not intend those wearing knitted kippot, since the kippa is not what testifies the person. His intention is only some politicians who left the source of life and collaborated with decrees of the Torah world.
"The rest of knitted kippot are all loved," continued the rabbi, "I never knew what the difference is between knitted or black kippot, and it's nothing."
Member of the Council of Sages, wise Rabbi Shalom Cohen, and head of Yeshivat Porat Yosef, said last week: "It says war with Amalek. The chair is not complete as long as there is Amalek. The throne is the knitted kippa. As long as there is a knitted kippa, there is not a whole chair! That is Amalek ... when will the chair be whole? When there are no knitted kippot ... are these Jews?"
