To Jerusalem Magistrate's Court four suspects were arrested last night in Meah Shearim. A minor and three adults, and they were arrested on suspicion of rioting and breach of public order, after verbally attacking a Haredi soldier who came to the neighborhood. After consultation with the Police Attorney's Office, it was decided to request the extension of detention for the purpose of filing indictments against them.
One of them, a minor was released to house arrest under restrictive conditions until Friday. Against the other suspects were filed demanding statements, prior to the filing of charges against them, and their detention was extended until Friday.
Yesterday (Tuesday) a little after 19:00, a Haredi soldier came Meah Shearim neighborhood of Jerusalem, where he was attacked by a group of fanatics who saw him in an army uniform.
The soldier panicked and ran into a building on Nahum Ish Gamzo Street, where he was hiding and called police, who found it difficult to reach him even with the assistance of Riot Police reinforcements due to a local gathering of protesters and fanatics, who were throwing stones, bottles and water bags.
After about 10 minutes, police were able to overcome the obstacles, entered the building where the soldier was hiding and rescued him.
With the extraction of the soldier, the extremists did not stop throwing stones and other items at police and demonstrators, and the latter arrested four suspects for riots and disorder, including one minor. As mentioned, the four will be brought at 15:00 for remand at Court.
D., the mother of the Baal Teshuva soldier assaulted, said yesterday in a conversation with B'Chadrei Charedim: "This is terrible. But I am aware that this is not an extreme group and doesn’t represent the public. The treatment solution is in the hands of the authorities, they need to make order and treat this phenomenon through the echelon in the country. "
In contrast, Yisrael Meir Hirsch, leader of "Neturei Karta, told B'Chadrei Charedim," these soldiers are thieves, stealing the Orthodox identity. There should be no distinction between a religious and a secular soldier. A Haredi who treads on the threshold of the army becomes totally secular even if he prays and puts on tefillin 10 times a day."
