Lynch in Mea Shearim • Haredi soldier attacked by radicals and rescued by Border Police

Pogroms against a haredi soldier, a ba'al tshuva in Jerusalem: on Gamzu street in the heart of Mea Shearim, a haredi soldier was violently attacked tonight (Tuesday) by several dozen radical residents of the neighborhood. The soldier ran into a building and called the police which broke in - and rescued him.

The soldier, a resident of central Israel, became a ba'al tshuva a few years ago and is studying at the Shuvu Banim Yeshiva. He passed in the neighborhood, wearing IDF uniform, on his way to visit relatives, who are ba'alei tshuva too.

A group of fanatics called insults at him, and the group members began to chase him. They beat him with sticks and fists. The soldier pushed them and ran into an office on Gamzu street - where he hid.

The frightened soldier alerted the police forces which arrived, accompanied by an augmented SWAT team to rescue him. When the police arrived they were attacked with cries of "Nazis! Nazis! Get out of here, "and stones were thrown at them, as well as water bottles and bags.

Meanwhile, the police tried for several minutes to break in to the building to rescue the soldier, but the mob of rioters prevented them.

Border Guard forces tried to disperse the protesters, but they continued their disturbance. Four rioters were arrested.

Only after 10 minutes the forces joined the soldier. He changed his clothes and was taken out of the neighborhood. He did not need medical treatment.

The drama did not end: police were trapped inside the apartment and Border Police officers were forced to join them, to rescue them and disperse the protesters.

Police announced that it had documented the rioters and that more arrests are expected.

Nahal Haredi rabbis responded and said: "The attack of the haredi soldier in Mea Shearim is a disgrace. This act is not Jewish nor haredi - an act of Chilul Hashem. With all our pain as haredim about government actions we must not vent our anger on the haredi soldiers, who are our own flesh. The fact that we are nine days before Tisha B'Av, the day where we raise the memory of the destruction of the Beis Hamikdosh, places the act of hatred in a shameful light. It's time our community, the Haredi public, will denounce the perpetrators, something which will contribute to the prevention of such shameful acts in the future. "

According to his family, the soldier was in shock: "Too bad that this reception of the haredi to those in the process of repentance," they said.
