Egged announced to the state comptroller that she was going to cancel the order granting free tickets on Motzei Shabbos from the Western Wall, on the 1-2-3 lines. This is because most of the passengers do not pay the Company the proceeds for tickets.
For many years, it is customary that on Motzei Shabbos Egged does not charge for bus travel from the Western Wall, because passengers do not have how to pay. According to the arrangement the passengers must transfer the fare, or if they own a monthly bys pass are exempt from paying.
But, it turns out that despite the Egged Company which requires payment to be made later, they refuse to issue passes to travelers like other travel fee.
Rabbi Yonathan Shtenzel, contacted Egged, and wondered about this, having received no answer contacted the State Comptroller. Egged in return gave a surprising answer that the Orthodox do not pay in the end and therefore Egged company also intends to cancel the arrangement.
Egged replied that "as a tribute to the company's observant passengers, the company allows those returning from the Western Wall to travel only on the first buses on Motzei Shabbos from the Western Wall, to the city center free of charge, and so in the belief that they will pay the Company for this trip later. Yet this arrangement is expected to be canceled because the company probably realized that many of the passengers do not pay in the following days."
Egged officials explained to B'Chadrei Charedim: "While some of the passengers have a monthly pass and are exempt from paying, but according to estimates - compared to travelling in the Haredi sector – there is a certain percentage that does not have a free monthly pass, and this percentage does not pay. Every week only individuals pay and it's amazing."
