Chabad in Bnei Brak announced that they will oppose the shameful decision of the municipality, they say, to change the name of the street that links Nordau Street with Rabbi Broth Street in Pardes Katz to be named after Chabad Rebbes.

As reported recently in B'Chadrei Charedim, the city's naming committee published in the Haredi press a long list of street names unlikely to change soon. The publication is intended to discuss the proposals brought to the committee, and in addition allow residents to express their opposition to any offer - while giving an explanation.

Among other things, the municipality decided to grant of the streets to Chabad, "They seem to come out to bless and ended up cursing," said Rabbi Shmuel Offner, a resident of the city. "As a Chabad chassid and a resident of the area I am strongly opposed to the redhead alley being named after one of the Chabad Rebbes."

The reason for the resistance is due to the fact that the street is not suitable "for such a holy name". "There are no buildings on the street, the sidewalk is half-broken, it also has a petting zoo of some goats and ducks."

Rabbi Offner, who lives in the area, wonder what, would happen if they decide to give a name to one of the Lithuanians. "Pardes Katz neighborhood has a lot of Lithuanians and I am very curious to see how would react if the name of the alley will be the name of Rav Elyashiv zt"l. How would they react if the name of the Godol Hador will connect to all the violence and crime which happens there?"

As mentioned, Chabad intend to fight the decision and planning to act in any way to change it.

Avraham Tenenbaum, spokesman for the Bnei Brak municipality said in response: "The city has acted leniently when released to all Haredi press the list only so that residents could express their opposition. Also local residents are invited to express their views and to send a letter, transferred to the Names Committee and will be reviewed in a businesslike way."
