Brooklyn billboards: "A person is obligated to teach his son craftsmanship"

Billboards appeared today (Sunday) at key intersections in Brooklyn and Manhattan calling parents to teach their children core studies with Talmudic law "a father must teach his son craftsmanship."

Billboards costing thousands of dollars were paid for by the YAFFED organization headed by Naftali Mostar, a 27 year old Belze chassid.

Mostar argues that one should teach secular subjects at the yeshivas to allow yeshiva students who want to work after marriage, to gain a profession.

Mostar said that, "At some point I decided I wanted to learn a trade I went to Touro College, and found that I was missing basic tools like accounting, English, etc., so I can learn a profession. Until eighth grade I learned secular studies but then stopped.

"Today, at the age of 27 I completed a BA in Psychology and I want to continue to MA and to work as a psychologist in the Hasidic public to which I belong. I founded the organization and hung the billboards to inspire the public, the rabbis, the Roshei Yeshivas and parents to teach their children a craft, to lead secular studies not only in cheder but also in yeshiva.

"Rebbes and Roshei Yeshivas," says Mostar, live happily ever after and do not have financial problems financing their chassidim and students and therefore it is difficult for them to step into the young student shoes who must support a family, pay rent, tuition, summer camps and more.

"I believe," he added, "if parents require secular studies at the yehsivas, conference Roshei Yeshiva and school administrators will have to bring in secular studies.

"I believe," he continued, "the rabbis could sit down and make a plan to fit the secular studies to the ultra-Orthodox public," said Mostar and ensures the billboards will be there until July 4th, in front of thousands of Haredim who make their way from Brooklyn to Manhattan every day. "And especially today," he adds, "When tens of thousands of people will come from Brooklyn to rally against the yeshiva recruitment."
