The Ministerial Legislative Committee was to discuss today (Sunday) a new bill by MK Elazar Stern of The Movement, designed to facilitate the conversion process, but the latter withdrew the proposal as the 'Jewish Home' party sent messages that it would veto the proposal.
According to Stern's bill, any city and local council rabbi would be able to set up a conversion court, without obtaining permission of the Rabbinical Court.
The situation today is that any conversion requires the signature of the President of the Beis Din, which centers the authority granting conversions in Israel in his hands.
If the bill will pass, the authority will be dispersed among rabbis of cities in the country.
Although Stern withdrew the proposal at the moment, he made it clear that he does not intend to give up and that will again bring it up for vote in the coming weeks.
