"Torah opinion to protest" or "do not do demonstrations"?
יעקב כהן

Tens of thousands are expected to gather tomorrow (Sunday) at the Federal Plaza Square in Manhattan to protest against the recruitment decree hovering on the world of Torah in Israel.

Besides the two Satmar factions, other groups have also confirmed their participation, including Lithuanian circles. But while in Israel the Gedolei Yisrael are still grappling with the question of the protests and participation in them, on Friday was published in the newspaper Hapeles a letter, signed by Rabbi Eliyahu Ber Wachtfoigel, Rosh Yeshiva of South Fallsburg calling for the public to strengthen the rally and calling everyone who can attend .

In the letter Hgra"b Wachtfoigel quotes Hgr"s Kanievsky, Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky's son, "and Maran Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky said through his son shlita his loyal son Rabbi Shlomo Kanievsky that "daas Torah concludes that do all you can, and hold protests abroad against the decree and the uprooting of the Torah in the Land of Israel."
But to B'Chadrei Charedim a letter arrived, signed by the two sons of Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky - Rabbi Shlomo and Rabbi Yitzhak Shaul Kanievsky - where they write: "We were asked by Maamo"r Maran Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky Shlita to publish his opinion, that since the opinion of Hgray"l Steinman shlita is against demonstrations and there is no use of it, and the main thing is to increase the Torah and fear of Heaven and prayers, and only by that can we cancel all evil decrees, therefore his opinion is so too - and whatever Hgray"l says you shall do."

At the bottom of the letter Hgr"ch even added in his handwriting: "Everything is clear and still exists."

Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Shmuel Kamenetsky, a member of Council of Torah Sages of Agudath Yisrael in America, issued a letter on Friday to U.S. Bnei Torah, which ordered not to participate in the demonstration.

"To all dear students, who asked my opinion about the demonstration will which be in Manhattan to participate or not, and if it involves a cancellation of the Torah. In my opinion only Torah and prayer will help eliminate the terrible decrees in the Land of Israel, Thus it was written by Hgray"l Steinman and Hgr"ch Kanievsky shlita in a letter which reached me today on Erev Shabbos Parashas Korach not to participate in the demonstrations ... And whatever Hgray"l Steinman says we will do."

The letter was published in all Lithuanian yeshivas and all Batei Midrash in Lakewood, Borough Park, Baltimore and all haredi areas across the U.S.
