35 year old male resident of Tirat Carmel was arrested tonight (Monday) after midnight, when he tried to set fire to a synagogue. He claimed in his investigation that he did it for Messianic reasons.
Superintendent Rami Raz, Tirat Carmel police chief said that the man was caught "red-handed" after passersby noticed a suspicious movement inside the synagogue on Bialik Street in the city. Station's patrol officers arrived within minutes and arrested the man in act.
According to police, the man had already managed to pour gasoline on the Ark and its surroundings, and a lit a siddur which had been slightly burned.
Haifa Magistrate's Court extended his detention by a day, at a hearing held in absentia, since he was sent to a psychiatric examination, and his case has not yet received a reply.
