It is doubtful if anyone knows what exactly the influence of the chief rabbi is, but the issue of selecting the chief rabbis recently became a first class supplier of headers, and the factors meddling in the cauldron care not to fail and produce daily spins.
Last week B'Chadrei Charedim published on the meeting between Hgr"s Amar and Rabbi David Stav, at a bar mitzvah for the son of Rabbi Pinto. Amar's people repeatedly claim that the two had not met nor talked, but the images published here speak for themselves.
It seems that the best proof of the very existence of the meeting, and perhaps the start of the Amar-Stav deal is at that meeting, lies in the fact that today (Sunday) was the Amar law passed in the ministerial committee for legislation, with the support declared by Habayit Hayehudi, and a majority of six against one - Justice Minister Tzipi Livni who opposed.
Habayit Hayehudi explain that the law passed and was supported by them: "Having achieved a partnership between Amar and religious Zionism, in this partnership Rabbi Amar agreed to support any candidate for religious Zionist Ashkenazi rabbi which Habayit Hayehudi faction will support."
Emphasis we should pay attention to: "Every candidate for religious Zionist." i.e., including Rabbi Stav. Did the people of Rabbi Amar weave a deal behind the back of Harav Ovadia Yosef, who opposes all the candidacy of Rabbi Stav even at the cost of non continuing service of Rabbi Amar? According to those close to Rabbi Amar, the Rabbi does not support Rabbi Stav in any way, according to Habayit Hayehudi, as stated, support is all! A candidate, whom they stabilize, including Rabbi David Stav...
The only question that remains open is why Minister Uri Ariel supported the law. He is certainly not doing it for the election of Rabbi Stav and is loyal to his Rabbis. Some say: Netanyahu's promise to take care of the 'fit' applicant (not Rabbi Stav). How: compromise reached by Netanyahu, who mediated between Elazar Stern and Habayit Hayehudi – to the voter body will be added only 30 delegates, ten of whom shall be appointed by Netanyahu, another 20 by Habayit Hayehudi. In this seam line Bibi will take care of Rabbi Ariel and / or Rabbi Lau (father) favorite candidate, or maybe even the son, Rabbi David Lau, Chief Rabbi of Modi'in, who was supported by the Intelligence Mayor Chaim Bibas - associate of Netanyahu.
Hgr"s Amar's office said in response: "At this difficult hour when the people of Israel are faced with a social, economic and religious cleft, which threatens to create an irreversible rift among the people - we need balanced and responsible leadership of Rabbi Shlomo Moshe Amar who will carry on his shoulder the burden of the Chief Rabbinate in Zion, and will serve as a bridgehead between the various groups in the Israeli population. Concerning the question, is it even at the price of placing of Rabbi David Stav in the square of Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi, chose not to comment there...
