Harav Ovadia Yosef: "We had to return the deposit to Deri"

President of the Council of Sages, Harav Ovadia Yosef, addressed during his weekly sermon on Motzei Shabbos the decision of the Council of Torah Sages of the Shas party, to appoint MK Aryeh Deri as the chairman of the movement.

During the lesson, Harav Ovadia said: "Rabbi Aryeh Deri was the founder of the movement. Ten years ago he was Minister of the Interior and adjusted each conference, regardless of Sephardim, Ashkenazim. He supported them all. Rabbi Shach clearly said: We have one young Sephardi who did what Agudath Yisrael didn’t do for forty years.

"They took him to jail and when he was released he was not allowed to return, because of the law. A few months ago he was finally able to return.



Before going to jail I promised him the deposit is in our hands. He was first, so we returned it to him. Judge him favorably and Hashem will judge you favorably."

Concerning MK Eli Yishai Harav Ovadia said: "Our friend, Rabbi Eliyahu Yishai, is an upright and straight man, who is faithful to my house, he never got angry, all he did was successful. I am grateful, he did everything with wisdom and humility, never boasted, was never supercilious.

"I thank him for all he did. May Hashem fill his days and years with only good."
