Deputy Chairman of the Knesset, Moshe Feiglin, surprises with a post published this morning, when he declared that he was opposed to force a core curriculum on the Haredi sector. "Concerning the Orthodox and attempt to impose core studies on them, I am completely with the ultra-Orthodox," he writes in a post on his Facebook page.
"Education is the responsibility of the parents not the state," he writes. "The state will decide who to give a high school diploma and those who give up on it, this is their full right.
Tomorrow Porush will be the Prime Minister and force you to learn Gemara in core curriculum - what will you say? He thinks it's more important than English - (and between us, I think so too).
If he tries to keep your budget from you if you do not learn Gemara, I'll go against him. But if he says that without the Talmud, Israel has no high school diploma - it will be his democratic right.
I do not want to, nor do I have the right, to tell Ahmed Tibi what to teach his son, or Litzman, or Dov Hanin.
Of course personally I think these studies are important - including all education is important and that "a man must teach his son a profession" - i.e. core curriculum prevention in my opinion is also against Jewish law. But it does not matter what I think, it matters what the parent thinks. They are not criminals, and are allowed to think differently from me and from the Minister of Education.
Please do not say "if they do not teach they also do not get money." The State does not do anyone a favor. The money it gives is first taken. When the state gives it basically returns. So if you do not take any more taxes from the haredim or from other groups – then this statement has place. But to take and not give (and take by force) on the one hand - and make the proceeds adoption worldview - is the most dangerous deterioration of totalitarianism.
Really police thought.
It reminds me of the bully, who robbed my friend, his coat on the subway in New York (minus 20 degrees) and then demanded $ 5 to return it to him.
