Storm in Williamsburg: One of the city's rabbis, who is a chassid of the Satmar Rebbe, spoke out against those who carry on Shabbos in the city - even in parts where there is an eruv, calling them "Shabbos violators in public."
The question has long been debated in Williamsburg: Is it permissible to rely on the local eruv? Certain communities allow it, others prohibit it.
A conference was held in Williamsburg including those Rabbis who prohibit carrying on Shabbos. This is an annual conference, held in regular ritual, which also attack the communities reliant on the eruv.
One of the speakers at the conference was Rabbi Chaim Dovid Katz, a Satmar rabbi in Borough Park – a chassid of the Satmar Rebbe, who is amongst those who staunch the eruv, mainly supported - by their opponents - Mahara Satmar Rebbe.
Hgrh"d Katz began his firm and harsh speech, during which he made piercing statements, which raised eyebrows even among the organizers of the conference:
"One can perhaps say that one who carries on Shabbos, it's as if he violates Shabbos in public! One who violates Shabbos cuts himself off from Klal Yisrael. One who carries on Shabbos disconnects from the community and will not merit the coming of Mashiach."
