Why do Haredim not 'celebrate' Holocaust Memorial Day?

In an outrageous column, Akiva Weingarten explains why the Haredim did not commemorate the 'legacy of the Holocaust' • Who does not travel in a Mercedes, but also does not repeat, 'we won't forget and won't forgive'? • What is the connection to the Daf Yomi?

Although the vast majority of Haredi public which belongs to the Ashkenazi sector are descendants of Holocaust survivors, there is no 'Holocaust education' by us, we do not sanctify the subject of 'we won't forget and won't forgive', and children of Zichron Meir or Mea Shearim have not even heard the term "never again" of the JDL (Jewish Defense League - Kahana).

Although the personal harm was well felt over the years, for example, the father of the writer – who is a son of Holocaust survivors – would never bring into his home a product made in Germany, and to this day he refuses to drive a car made by Mercedes, so as not to enjoy the same padding which Hitler enjoyed.

But even those parents will not do any action to instill in their children the "Holocaust legacy", although an in-depth look, the rabbis who themselves passed through the hell could not "ignore" it, such as the Bobov Rebbe (R' Shlomo), R' S. Schwab, R' Michael Ber Weissmandel, Harav Vosner and the Rebbe of Erloy who said Kinos and wrote books about the Holocaust. Nevertheless, they strongly opposed creating something that will become a symbol for generations.

I do not mean there is no talk at all about the Holocaust, on Seder night we heard from grandfather of his miraculous rescue, it was an evening of praise and thanksgiving - instead of perpetuating the affliction and the lessons learned. Even on Tisha B'Av we used to read books about the Holocaust, along with other disasters experienced by the people of Israel - the decrees of Khmelnitsky, the Inquisition, and the greatest of all - the destruction of the Beis Hamikdosh.

Because contrary to the Zionists who built the country on the ruins of European Jewry, Haredi Judaism saw the Holocaust as another trouble, terrible, horrible, with heavy casualties, but after all - another event to add to the long suffering in which the soft sheep is devoured by 70 wolves, and the very fact that the secular used it to build something without the burden of Torah and Mitzvos, increased the antagonism against anything which had the smell of Holocaust and / or independence.

This is likened (lehavdil a thousand times, ofcourse), to the opposition by fanatical factions to Daf Hayomi, although it involves studying a page of Talmud. There was even one zealous Rebbe I knew who opposed any constant learning according pages, and ordered his hassidim to learn without a basis of pages, just because it's 'similar to Daf Hayomi, but today even in Satmar and Toldos Aharon they have a Daf Hayomi of or a daily page of their own, but not the one established by R' Meir Shapiro, for he was known as a member of Agudath Yisrael, and something anything which Agudah sanctified - can not be used by the radicals to rise in serving Hashem, a type of Sefer Torah written by a heretic.

So too with the Holocaust, Holocaust Memorial Day, the siren, the rituals conducted by the state, torch-lighting, or anything else that gives legitimacy to the Zionist state - which is does not adhere to the authority of the laws of the Torah, which has made and sanctified the Holocaust, even if for good causes, such as the continued protection of hundreds of thousands Haredim who reside in it.

Due to the sensitivity of the issue, I refrain from expressing a personal opinion one way or the other, but it is important for me to present the facts as they are, and it is clear that 'not standing during the siren' is not related in any way to the custom of gentiles etc, it is altogether to shift away from the symbols of this day.
