Did El Al - break their agreement and fly on Shabbos? A flight which left last week from the Tel Aviv airport to the airport in Berlin was by the ELAL Company under the service of the Israir service, when the plane itself and its crew belonged to ELAL.
The plane of the El Al Boeing 737 had 186 passengers. During the flight was a hydraulic system fault indicator was found and the plane needed a stopover in Arnica, where passengers were waiting until the problem was fixed.
But despite the code Israir flight, the fact that the plane and the pilots belong to ELAL Company angered many who applied to the Shabbos committee and ordered its leaders to find out whether the company violated the agreement on the observance of Shabbos.
Following appeals, the Commission had to request clarifications from the Company on the subject.
B'Chadrei Charedim received in a letter the details of a conversation that took place between the secretary of the committee, Rabbi Yitzhak Goldknopf and David Moyal, CEO of ELAL.
Vice president explained that the flight is by Sun Dor Company, "because they deal lately with license problems they are forced to hire the services of Israir during the weekend," he said. He further stressed that "there is no difference between the policies of then and now."
During the conversation Moyal said: "ELAL does not fly on Shabbos and did not fly on Shabbos. The proof of this he stresses is "if someone will turn to a travel agent and ask him to book a ticket for ELAL on Shabbos, he will not find such a date on the market."
