Four planes of the Ministry of Agriculture began this morning (Monday) with spraying operations against swarms of locusts in the South Halutza Sands in the western Negev, primarily in olive groves.

Yesterday a huge locust swarm, first identified by farmers in the Ramat Negev, penetrated Israel. This is an agricultural area located 30 kilometers from the border with Egypt. The Ministry of Agriculture reported that the swarm penetrated into Israel through Be'er Milka. The swarm is focused on two areas - Eshalim and Ofakim.

As night fell, the insects landed on the ground and small aircraft of the plant protection service of the Ministry of Agriculture, followed the swarm.

The Ministry of Agriculture asked the residents to close their homes and greenhouses in the region to defend against the new swarm.

The Nature Reserves Authority reported that the locust centers were treated with materials designed to destroy them without causing further damage to nature, and that the actions taken by employees of the Ministry of Agriculture were done in cooperation with the Authority and "thereby harm to other animals besides the locusts, was thwarted. "

There is mounting concern following the deeper penetration of the locusts into the Negev and places where there are open orchards and open fields, unlike greenhouses in the area of Pitchat Nitzana, and as a result of evidence from the south that the color of grasshoppers looks more yellow, indicating that they are approaching the stage of laying eggs. "If they will lay eggs here we will really go to war not only with swarms coming from Egypt but also local entrenchment and reproduction," said the head of the regional council to News 2.

Two days ago, grasshoppers were also observed in central Israel. Among others, insects were seen in North Tel Aviv neighborhoods and beaches. It is estimated that this is not part of a wandering swarm, but single grasshoppers which migrated northward by winds. Other grasshoppers were observed in other cities in the center of Israel and on the beach, in Rehovot, Ashdod and Herzliya.
