After archeological digging at the Schneller site compound, opposite the Chabad Yeshiva in Jerusalem on Jeremiah Street, dozens of charedim came to demonstrate, citing concern for the presence of graves in caves uncovered there. Some of the demonstrators interrupted works and blocked the road with the bins.
As a result, police arrested seven protesters, and excavations continued as order. Police intend to bring at least some of the detainees to court for remand.
A source involved in the construction project told B'Chadrei Charedim that the Schneller compound - next to Gur Beit Midrash – where construction work is being carried out, a group of protesters appeared this morning, and identified themselves as representatives of the 'Atra Kadisha'.
The protesters claimed that there were caves that require tight control over the work area. "It is not clear whether the caves have bones, but the mere discovery of caves raises need for supervision," said a representative of the organization.
B'Chadrei Charedim has learned that one of the detainees is Rabbi Shmuel David Rothschild, a Satmar Rosh Kollel.
On the other hand, a source involved in the construction project said: "We are not going to pay Shmidel Tax. Those responsible summoned the police to disperse the protesters."
