New eruption in the walls of Shabbos in Jerusalem, threatening to disrupt the balance in the fabric of life together in the city: a new initiative of young people who want to open entertainment venues in the city on Shabbos, a move accepted with the approval of market traders and universities in the city. The members of the project's aim is to allow the opening of the Machane Yehuda market and the Hebrew University also on Shabbos, much to the dismay of the religious residents of the capital.

The report was published last week in the Ma'ariv newspaper. According to the plan as advertised, Mahane Yehuda market will open next week with the purpose to host an improvisational performances, parties and guest lecturers who the entrepreneurs intend to bring to the site. Later, the organizers intend to make the initiative a permanent tradition every weekend, in the Machane Yehuda market and the Hebrew University in Givat Ram, where there will be a Science Happening for families in the Science Museum.

To give the initiative a stigma of conciliatory mood of coexistence between layers of society, the organizers claim that 'they will open synagogues for joint meetings of the religious and secular communities for the upcoming Passover holiday. "Shabbos in Jerusalem is a volatile matter", they are defending themselves, "So far the public domain on Shabbos in Jerusalem was in the hands of one sector. Every Israeli citizen knew he had no reason to be in the capital on Shabbos because the city is closed, but no more."

Secular figures also related to the project say: "The idea is to revitalize the culture of entertainment in the life of the youth in Israel."
The initiative was immediately criticized by the ultra-Orthodox public, Chairman of the Committee for the sake of Shabbos in the ultra-Orthodox community, Rabbi Yosef Rosenfeld, said that the initiative will not be carried out. "We will operate using all means; this is a serious violation of the status quo without a doubt. The market should be closed on Shabbos, night or day, absolutely. "

Amongst sanctions the Eideh Charedi will initiate, in addition to the expected stormy demonstrations, they make clear that the kashrus certification will be removed immediately from dozens of stores bearing the supervision of the Badatz. It is reasonable to assume that at least these traders will not sit by idly and will try to thwart the move which might stir up the city and cause mass desecration of Shabbos.
