Politicians' support for Rabbi David Stav in his run for the Chief Rabbinate, widens: Chairman of the Movement, and Justice Minister-designate Tzipi Livni, announced that her party would support the election of Rabbi Stav to the role of Ashkenazi chief rabbi. This is rabbinate elections expected to take place in the coming months.
In the weekly party meeting members of the movement decided to adopt the position of MK Elazar Stern, who expressed his support for David Stav, as well as promote and support legislation that will determine representation of women in the committee for electing judges and the body that selects the Chief Rabbis.
Even Israel Beiteinu and Yesh Atid declared last week that Stav is their candidate for Chief Rabbi, and thereby Rabbi Stav is guaranteed support of 36 Knesset members, besides the Jewish Home.
Chairman of the Jewish Home, Naftali Bennett, formed a few weeks ago a committee to examine the issue, and will choose one of the three candidates for the role. The decision was postponed until after the establishment of the government, and factors in the faction believe that the reason for this is clarifying the balance of power against the haredi public.
Earlier this week, MK Rabbi Shai Piron, number two in Yesh Atid, declared that his party "sees great value that the next chief rabbi will be such that he and his children have served in the IDF, and is a model of greatness in Torah and involvement in Israeli society."
