Confusion in Antwerp: the local police and tax inspectors raided (Tuesday) afternoon the slaughterhouse of the Machzikei Hadas, whilst in full swing of slaughtering chickens for Passover. The police confiscated the birds and documents.
Slaughterhouse - Kosher Poultry, is also used by the charedi community in Vienna, in order to save on taxes and other expenses. Yesterday was a day dedicated to the slaughter for the community in Vienna, and for this purpose came to Antwerp Rabbi Moshe Eliezer Weiss, Rabbi of Congregation Machzikei Hadas in Vienna, and the shochet Rabbi Menachem Simon, who came especially from Beit Shemesh.
Slaughter took place as usual, but suddenly the tax inspectors arrived accompanied by police and stopped the slaughter.
A source close to the affair said to B'Chadrei Charedim: "We have no doubt that there was denunciation of hostile elements, because the inspectors arrived just when the slaughter was underway. In any case it was not pleasant, some slaughterhouse workers who work unofficially got scared and started chaos, the inspectors demanded identity documents from everyone, confiscated documents, and after a long time of investigation - reports of irregularities were discovered at the slaughterhouse, fear of tax evasion, lack of slaughtering permits and more."
He said, "At the time there were supervisors, shochtim and Rabbi of Machzikei Hadas in Vienna. The inspector's confiscated a thousand chickens which have been slaughtered, and the slaughter was stopped. The inspectors also found that some slaughterhouse workers, supervisors and staff, worked in 'black' and have not reported their income, as well as the fact that Machzikei Hadas management of Vienna did not have certification required to approve slaughter at the slaughterhouse in Antwerp."
