Charedi collected a bag of locusts to eat "Bissli of yesteryear"

Farmers in the South are pained by the damage swarms of locusts caused to the crops in the Negev, which are estimated in millions of shekels, but there are those very pleased with the arrival of locusts to our country.

Mayer Rene, charedi resident of Tel Aviv, said this morning (Wednesday) to 'Walla' that he arrived very early morning to Kibbutz Be'er Milka to see the wonder and catch the locusts to eat them.

"We started to collect and filled a quarter sack. This is a desert grasshopper, kosher from the Torah," he says. "Since I was little I heard stories that we ate it in Yemen, collected bags and put it in the oven, and I look forward to it. I ate a few years ago, a small one, it was delicious."

He said, "I had one a few years ago, it's like Bissli. You bake it in the oven, you eat it like nuts. It was the Bissli of yesteryear. You chop his head down, pull the legs and wings, and you eat what remains."

Since this morning border three planes pesticide spraying are sprinkling the area bordering with Egypt, to bring destruction to swarms remains, lest the winds from the north will not be strong enough and will be able to spread east toward the green areas in the Negev desert.

Meanwhile, Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef, Rosh Yeshiva Chazon Yosef, wrote today in response to Rabbi Aaron Zakaim, Rosh Yeshiva of Arazim, that it is forbidden to eat the locusts, "It is customary to not eat any grasshopper, even when there are signs, and even when we know its name is grasshopper since we are not familiar with their names and their signs and we have no clear tradition about it.
