Australia admits Zygier was not involved in Mabhouh assassination

An official report of the Australian Foreign Ministry states: Ben Zygier was not involved in the liquidation of Hamas leader Mahmoud Mabhouh carried out in Dubai. Australia's Foreign Minister, Robert Carr, said yesterday (Tuesday) before submitting the report that no evidence of illegal use of passports issued to Zygier was found, who changed his name several times.

Despite this clarification, the foreign minister said that there are several unanswered questions about passports issued for Australian citizens working for foreign governments. Zygier himself, said Carr, lived in Israel and worked for the government, but did not specify if at the institution or another intelligence service.

Foreign Minister warned that if it turns out that Israel had used Australian passports for espionage Australia will play the most severe condemnation.

The report also reveals that there were deficiencies in handling the Zygier case at the Australian authorities and that they did not know about his arrest.

Ben Zygier, called "Prisoner X", began when members of the Knesset related queries submitted to the Minister of Public Security. Prime Minister's Office initially sought to prevent the publication, although later confirmed that Ben Zygier – Alon was imprisoned in Israel under a serious indictment. The findings of the investigation show that suicide was committed without an external factor.
