Chances of medical complications related to circumcision - three times higher when the mohel is not authorized by the Chief Rabbinate. According to data presented last week to the Circumcision Committee, joint to the Chief Rabbinate and the Ministry of Health.

According to the report, in 2012 there were 38 cases in hospitals of complications related to circumcision, out of about 60 thousand births of Jewish boys in Israel that year. According to Dr. Eli Shosheim, a member of the committee, the risk of complications inherent in these data - the level of 0.06% - significantly lower than in most medical procedures available.

Out of 38 cases of complications, 14 cases occurred as a result from the circumcision made by an authorized mohel. "About 20% of the circumcisions are executed by unauthorized mohels, but they are responsible for almost 40% of complications," said Health Ministry official committee, Dr. Moshe Westreich. And in percentages, likely complications for an unauthorized are 0.11%, compared to 0.04% for authorized mohels - almost three times the amount.

Rabbi Moshe Morsiano, head of circumcisions at the Chief Rabbinate of Israel, noted with satisfaction that overall, the data reflects in a significant reduction in the incidence of complications last year: "In 2011 54 complications were recorded. We attribute the drop in cases of complication to an increase in the availability of mohels, come take care of babies in their homes thus eliminating the need to appeal to the emergency room. "

However, according to Dr. Westreich this is not enough: "Our examination found that in many cases parents contacted the sorting because they wanted to avoid harassing the mohel on Shabbos." Because of this, the Committee decided to take a new procedure, which requires the mohels to be available on the phone on Shabbos, and answer a call. "It is also important to inform the parents if something happens on Shabbos, to contact the mohel and he shall be available to care for the baby if necessary," says Dr. Westreich.

Circumcision Committee is also engaged in certifying mohelim. Tests deal with religious issues, ethical and extensive medical. At the same meeting in which the data was examined three mohels were tested. One of them is required to answer what are the clinical signs that infection occurred at the circumcision site, and then required to appoint the risks caused by the use of various anesthetic creams.

Another new procedure requires the Mohelim to give parents a written document in which the infant detailed explanations of how to deal with the baby after the circumcision, and how to act in emergency situations which may arise.
