Supreme Court orders: no mikveh in a secular area

The High Court dismissed the establishment of a mikveh in Rechovot: three years of legal proceedings came to an at the religious council in Rechovot- reports Haaretz this morning.

In July 2010, the establishment of a mikveh was approved on Chen Boulevard. Some residents in area appealed against the decision and argued that the establishment is contrary to the plans previously approved by the municipality, which has designated the area for the construction of a club or nursery school.

District Court - Center received the claim and ordered the cancellation of construction of the mikveh. Religious Council decided not to give up and appealed in the Supreme Court. According to the Council, the mikveh should have been established on lone grounds located near the synagogue and there is justification for its existence.

Chief Rabbi of Rechovot, Rabbi Simcha Hacohen Kook, spoke to the judges and told them that the mikveh is "an essential urgent need" and it is very important for women living in the area and seeks the establishment.

Residents of the area, however, argued that the area is secular in nature, and claims the religious council does not reflect reality.

After a long legal process, the Supreme Court left the decision of the District and the establishment of the mikveh in question was canceled.
